On Wednesday, Year 2 pupils hopped in a time machine and travelled back to 1897. Dressed for the occasion and equipped with dip pens, the children were then immersed into the strict atmosphere of a Victorian schoolroom. Each student had their hands inspected for cleanliness before chanting their lessons and practising good manners. Following a break, pupils were given the opportunity to visit a carefully-curated ‘museum’. They explored and sketched an array of Victorian artefacts, including a copybook, a posser and a commemorative plate for the Diamond Jubilee!
An afternoon carousel of Victorian craft activities proved to be the highlight of the day. The children enjoyed fashioning and decorating their own beeswax candles, spinning tops, balancing parrots, porcelain mugs and lavender bags. Peg dolls were designed with care and colourful cork boats were eagerly tested in a giant bucket of water. With goody-bags filled to the brim with new creations, the day was concluded with a traditional ‘ghost story’ with an unexpected twist!
Pupils and staff agreed that it had been a wonderful day; our particular thanks goes to Phil Cooke and ‘Those History People’ who brought our topic learning to life in such an exciting and engaging manner!
