Years 3 & 4

Inspiring confident, curious learners from age 7 to 9 through exceptional teaching, outstanding pastoral care, and small class sizes.

The Junior Department at King’s gives your daughter or son the best possible start to their Prep education, where academic excellence and personal development go hand in hand.

Families are drawn to Years 3 and 4 at King’s because we combine strong academic teaching, with a nurturing and creative environment, tailored to each child:

  • Small class sizes for individual attention;
  • Experienced and dedicated teachers;
  • Excellent academic outcomes, ensuring every child meets their potential;
  • Broad curriculum, including Sport, Music, Art, Design Technology, and Drama;
  • Exception pastoral care, where every child is known;
  • Welcoming to new children joining the school at this entry point.

Based in St Martin’s, on the main school campus, pupils in the Junior Department build upon the crucial foundations laid in Pre-Prep, following a more structured timetable of individual subject lessons.

continuity and consistency

Pupils continue to benefit from the continuity and consistency of being taught predominantly by their Form Tutor, who is responsible for monitoring their academic and social development, whilst receiving specialist teaching in a greater number of subjects, including:

  • Art
  • Computing (ICT)
  • Drama
  • Design Technology
  • French
  • Games
  • Latin
  • Music
  • Physical Education

Enhanced Learning

Beyond the classroom, pupils’ learning is enhanced through an exciting programme of themed trips and visits, including the hugely popular Year 3 Ancient Egyptian Day and the Year 4 Roman Day. The Junior Production, Golden Ticket Afternoon, Year 4 Ceilidh, Carols Around the Tree and an annual Poetry Celebration are also highlights in the Junior Department calendar.

Within a happy, tightly-knit community, founded upon high expectations and mutual supportiveness, on the upper two floors of our St Martin’s building, Year 3 and 4 pupils relish beginning the more formal phase of their education.

Every child is unique, and here at King’s we work closely with pupils to help them:

  •  Build confidence and independence;
  • Develop strong academic foundations;
  • Discover interests beyond the classroom;
  • Make strong friendships across year groups;
  • Act as positive role models for children in the Pre-Prep.
