Asset 4
Nurturing a love of creativity and offering pupils numerous performance opportunities in our state of the art Sports and Cultural Centre.

Performing Arts at King’s continues to flourish, offering an ever-growing array of opportunities for pupils of all ages to engage creatively, build confidence, and develop their performance skills. It is an especially exciting journey, marked by inspiring projects, memorable productions, and a sense of enthusiasm across all year groups. From drama and dance to music and technical theatre, pupils embrace every challenge with curiosity and passion, demonstrating not only their artistic talents, but also their resilience and collaborative spirit.

Throughout the school, the energy and imagination of our young performers is impossible to miss. Our youngest budding actors delight audiences with their expressive storytelling and boundless enthusiasm, discovering the joy of being on stage, often for the very first time. Meanwhile, our accomplished senior pupils continue to raise the bar, taking on ambitious roles, engaging with complex material, and serving as role models for the younger performers.

Whether in rehearsals, workshops, co-curricular clubs, or full-scale productions, pupils show remarkable dedication, embracing every opportunity to learn, refine their craft, and support one another. The results are a vibrant and inspiring Performing Arts programme, celebrating creativity, fostering confidence and strengthening the cultural life of the entire school community.

performing arts opportunities

Pupils are not only the performers in these productions, they are also afforded opportunities to contribute to the design and construction of scenery, the creation of programmes, the preparation of costumes, and to gain insight into technical elements, such as sound and lighting.

Every year group participates in drama performances, and we warmly welcome the wider school community, parents, and families to attend and support these events.

Pre-prep

The Pre-Prep Department offers a range of opportunities for pupils to participate in the Performing Arts, including the Reception Nativity Play, the Year 1 Production, and the Year 2 Production. All pupils are assigned a speaking role and take part in full costume for each performance.  The pupils also enjoy Drama Workshops with visiting specialists during the year.

juniors (years 3 & 4)

In addition to the weekly Drama lessons, the Junior Department has an annual Drama Week, during which pupils are released from their regular timetable to participate in rehearsals, assist in the design and construction of scenery, and further develop their performance skills. The week concludes with each class presenting its own play, accompanied by selected songs.

In addition, the Junior Department hosts a Poetry Celebration each summer. Every pupil selects and memorises a poem for recital, creating a long-standing King’s tradition that is warmly regarded by pupils and their families.

Years 5 & 6

Now that the pupils are older and able to undertake more extended productions, they greatly enjoy staging the annual Middle School Musical Theatre Production. Recent productions have included Matilda Jr., Mary Poppins Jr., and The Wizard of Oz. Typically, Year 5 pupils form the chorus, while every Year 6 pupil is allocated a speaking part, with principal roles shared among several performers. The resulting productions are truly captivating, showcasing exceptional dancing, acting, and singing from all involved.

years 7 & 8

Building on the strength of the programme in Years 5 and 6, pupils in Years 7 and 8 stage more complex productions, approached with notable maturity and commitment. Pupils may audition for principal roles or chorus parts. The Senior Production is a much-loved feature of the June calendar, uniting pupils and staff in the creation of a truly impressive performance. Recent productions have included Oklahoma!, Oliver, Barnum, Bugsy Malone, and Honk!.

Each year, pupils continue to impress both staff and their families with their confidence, stage presence, and dedication to rehearsals. Many go on to secure leading roles in productions at their Senior Schools.
