King’s had 28 players entering the County Junior Chess Championships, known as the Megafinal.
Players who score 3.5 points out of 6 qualify for the National Semi-Finals (Gigafinals) of the UK Chess Challenge. 18 of the King’s players achieved this. King’s had 4 age group winners and 4 others who won medals for being second or third. This total of 8 was a record for one school; no other school won more than 2.
The King’s winners at the Megafinal held at the Perse on 9 June 2024:
Sophie C (joint 1st Under 12 girls), Jack M (2nd in Under 8 boys), Cindy T (2nd in Under 8 girls), Alex L (1st in Under 14 boys), Shashank P (1st in Under 12 boys), Hugo E (2nd in Under 12 boys), Jeremy Z (3rd in Under 12 boys) and Lily E (1st in Under 10 girls)
Successful gigafinalists are invited to the National Terrafinal for the top few players in each age group nationally. Alex L and Hugo E won through to this stage in 2023 and both performed very respectably.
