The return to a full competitive fixture list since the start of the pandemic has been welcomed by all this term and it has been great to see Girls’ Hockey and Boys’ Rugby and football back in full swing. Having parents being able to watch has also been a great addition and given these matches a very positive atmosphere.
Girls’ Sport – Michaelmas Term 2021
The girls have focused on hockey since we started the term, working hard to increase their skill sets, tactical understanding and attitude towards lessons and training. It has been great to have the girls playing fixtures against other schools and having parents watching them again.
The Under 13s (U13) have had a thoroughly enjoyable term bringing a real enthusiasm towards fixtures and loving every moment. Notable highlights have been the U13 B team going 0-2 down at half time against King’s Ely and showing real character to come back and win the game 3-2. The U13 A team had a fantastic game against St John’s, winning 4-1, demonstrating great improvement since the start of term. The U13 A team won their group at the County Cup only to narrowly miss out on East Regional Qualification in the semi-finals. U13 C-D have learnt a great deal this term playing in nail-biting games nearly every week with a good spread of wins, draws and losses. Individual performances from Katie and Ophelia have been mesmerising at times. Showing remarkable control, stick skills, decision making and desire to want always try their best in matches.
The Under 11s (U11) have come so far this term after missing out on fixtures last year. They have all started to grasp the competitiveness you need to bring as a team and individual to games, which has resulted in much better performances. Notable highlights have been: U11C and U11D teams beating The Perse School; U11A team going unbeaten at the County Cup; U11B drawing with St John’s, then showing real resilience and determination to get back into the game and score in the dying minutes to secure a well-deserved win. Individuals worth noting are; Lucia moving up from the D’s to the B’s and Carol incredibly moving up from the D’s to the A’s, such great progression over the course of a term. Special mention also goes to Bea, Esther, Aoife, Maggie, Kasuki, and Eleanor as having great seasons for the school.
The Under 9s (U9) have shown what team spirit and enthusiasm can bring to any game. Even creating their own chant before matches, creating a real joyous occasion! They have shown far improved skillsets since the start of term and are gradually understanding the tactical challenges of the game. They put together some great performances against Heathmount and Stephen Perse, winning both; they have had some tough games against St John’s and The Perse, narrowly missing out on wins, but learning loads from the experience.
Boys’ Sport – Michaelmas Term 2021
Boys’ Rugby has been a focus from day one and we have seen some great development in technical and tactical ability throughout training and fixtures.
The Year 8 team has worked hard to overcome the loss of some key players in the last couple of years but continued to battle on with great leadership and performances from Benny, Leo and Plum.
The Year 7 team have had very close fixtures with Oundle, St Faith’s and St John’s, suffering very close losses but remaining competitive throughout. Albie and Oscar have made several strong runs on attack whilst George and Aodhan have been resolute in defence.
Throughout the term the Year 6 team has made so much improvement, particularly in their tackling and rucking. There have been brilliant performances all round. Zach, Thomas, Jasper and Ed in particular have been excellent. Connor has been the biggest improver and has become a great asset to the team. As a team they are coming on superbly and really gelling – they should all be very proud of their efforts.
Year 5 started their rugby season after half term and look a great prospect for the future with all 39 boys involved in matches. The A and B teams both look very strong with good wins against St John’s and we have great depth in the C and D teams. Ivo and James have been dangerous on attack with Hugo, David and Theo outstanding in their defensive duties. Year 5 have also been involved in competitive football matches against the Perse.
Year 4 have had great tag rugby fixtures against St. John’s and St Faith’s in which all boys in the year group played; throughout the year there is much skill and promise for the future.
We have been so impressed with the resilience and tenacity of the Year 6 Football A Team, particularly in their match against The Perse. 1-0 down, 1-1, 2-1 down, then, with 5 minutes left, they scored twice to secure a win. Superb football played throughout and they showed real grit, winning every 50/50 ball.
Well done to all our King’s players!
