Years 5 – 8 (aged 9 -13)
Choosing the right school for your child at this stage is a significant decision. At King’s College School, Cambridge, the Senior Years (Years 5-8) provide exceptional preparation for senior school, combining academic rigour, outstanding pastoral care and a breadth of opportunity.
Whilst many pupils progress into Seniors from within King’s, we are always pleased to welcome new children into Years 5, 6, 7 and 8, subject to space availability.
Years 5 & 6 – building independence with care
In Years 5 and 6, pupils begin to experience a gradual transition to a senior-school style of education. With the guidance of experience Form Tutors and subject-specialist teachers, children develop greater independence in their learning, organisation and thinking, while still benefiting from close pastoral support.
Pupils move between lessons, adapt to a wider range of classrooms, and grow in confidence as learners; an important step for families seeking a school in Cambridge that prepares children thoroughly for senior education and beyond.
an enriching senior curriculum
Our Senior pupils benefit from the increasingly rich programme of opportunities designed to inspire and challenge:
- National essay-writing, mathematical and coding/critical thinking competitions;
- Musical life including orchestral and ensemble performance;
- Annual Performing Arts productions and performances;
- Annual Ski Trip (optional) and History Holiday (optional; to Rome & Sorrento in July 2026);
- Regular competitive sports fixtures and tournaments against other schools.

Year 7 – A pivotal year of growth
Year 7 represents an exciting and important stage in a child’s educational journey. Pupils take increasing responsibility for managing their own learning, identifying strengths and areas for development with the support of Form Tutors and specialist teachers.
This is also the stage at which families begin to consider senior-school entrance requirements. Our knowledgeable teaching staff provide careful academic guidance, helping pupils work confidently towards individual goals.
preparing for leadership and responsibility –
The penultimate year
In their penultimate year at King’s, pupils play an increasingly active role in school life:
- Representing the school in senior sports teams;
- Performing in concerts and the Senior Production;
- Participating in the Easter Term residential Outward Bound Trust trip.
These experiences encourage pupils to step outside their comfort zones, developing confidence, resilience and teamwork – all qualities highly valued by senior schools and future employers.
A sense of team spirit and constructive evaluation is fostered throughout the year, with pupils demonstrating a wider awareness of their own unique skills and strengths, as well as appreciating those of others.

Year 8

Girls and boys at King’s begin Year 8 with a residential trip to France, building on their language skills and doing plenty of sight-seeing too. It is a fantastic way to build closer friendships, to get to know their new Form Tutors and to welcome any new pupils joining the school at this stage.
As the most senior pupils in the school, Year 8 children embrace leadership and responsibility, applying for Prefect positions. They prepare for and sit entrance examinations for their chosen senior schools, supported throughout by Form Tutors and an experience team of subject-specialist teachers.
We aim to ensure pupils approach this important stage with confidence, kindness and purpose, well prepared both academically and emotionally for the transition ahead.
High Aspirations
In concert with high academic aspirations, pupils are encouraged to draw upon and develop all of their skills and talents, not only in readiness for the move into senior school, but also for their own pleasure and enjoyment.
Year 8 pupils are also expected to take on leadership roles within the school community, by modelling exemplary conduct for its younger members and mentoring them, as well as playing a prominent part in charity projects, concerts, sporting fixtures and the Senior Production.
At the end of this busy year, after all entrance examinations have been concluded, pupils celebrate and reflect upon their achievements at King’s during our Leavers’ Programme, which includes a residential trip to Ironbridge. As they look forward eagerly to beginning a new chapter in their education, Year 8 pupils leave us, we hope, as happy individuals, confident in embracing a future of exceptional possibilities.
