As the air raid sirens sounded this week, the children in Year 3 evacuated to Ely. Looking very smart in their Sunday best, with their teddies and gas mask boxes, our evacuees took on the names and roles of real children who were billeted to families in Ely during WW2. They found out first-hand about rationing with a taste of WW2 cake, ‘make do and mend’, upcycling and sewing on buttons and how the children made their own toys. A real step back in time to bring our History topic to life. Our pupils said: “I enjoyed pretending to be a pupil at the Jewish school because my Dad’s family were Jewish.” ” I liked doing the sewing and the drama when we were evacuees.” ” It was special when we got to try the cake – it was tasty!” “It was a lot of fun making my own toy horse.”
