Micro:Bit Challenge

Mar, 2024 | News

One rainy March morning, an excited group of children gathered by Little Tree. We were getting ready for the first ever Rotary coding competition. We drove over to the Centre for Computing History and were escorted to the table where we would code. After we spent some time by the old gaming consoles, we were introduced to the competition. We were tasked with coding a buggy with a Micro:Bit. We had two challenges which were split up into multiple tasks. Our first challenge was just to get used to the buggy and to simply move it around. Our second challenge was in preparation for a race. We started by making it not go off the track and finished with avoiding “road closures”, which were in fact cans of beans. After an intense session of coding and discussing, our challenge ended, and we had our lunch before the race. Schools were allocated to race tables where four schools would be situated. Schools would take turns to send their buggy around the track, going around turns and road closures. The first few schools did well with each lap. Eventually, it was our turn and as we turned the buggy on, silence fell. The buggy started off successfully but ended up “getting scared” as one of my teammates later said and turning back. Sadly, we did not finish the track, but nevertheless we gave it a go and did quite well. We arrived back at school, rather pleased and glad to have had our chance. We really enjoyed it and we had an amazing day out together.
