Sport and physical recreation are integral to the development of the children at King's. We have a strong school ethos of embracing the “sport for all” concept. Enjoyment and commitment to sport helps develop self-confidence, self-fulfilment, team spirit, and the ability to accept your part in victory and defeat, all important lessons for life’s challenges. Enthusiasm and competitiveness are key goals in all our sporting activities at King's.
We run a broad and balanced games programme; our aim is to encourage all pupils to represent their school in a major sport. We aim to at least run 3 teams per year group, thus enabling as wide a range of ability as possible to experience inter-school sport. We aim to instill the high standards of sporting conduct on and off the games fields in all our pupils.
From Years 3-4 there are 3 afternoon sessions per week dedicated to Games. In Years 5-8 the pupils enjoy 4 afternoon sessions of games.
There is a full programme of sporting activities offered at King's:
Boys’ Games: Rugby, Hockey, Football, Cricket, Athletics.
Girls’ Games: Hockey, Netball, Rounders, Athletics.
We also offer: Basketball, Kwik-cricket for girls, Real Tennis, Squash, Cross Country, Swimming (in our own pool) and a nationally rated orienteering team. We have an extensive programme of inter-school and inter-house competition, after school clubs, and sporting tours.
We have a significant number of coaching staff who currently play or coach at the highest levels. This ensures that all pupils are exposed to the most up-to-date techniques and tactics. Our high quality coaching is matched with some excellent sporting facilities both on and off site, including our own astroturf, two porous tar-courts and offsite, the use of the University Tartan Athletics Track and Cambridge Real Tennis Courts.
We have recently introduced a specific Games Programme to our Reception and Year 1-2 classes. We believe this early start combined with the Key Stage 1 guidelines will help us fulfil lthe potential of every pupil at King's.
We as a Sports Department combine the physical education and games departments. Our shared ethos for all pupils at King's is for them to be better athletes tomorrow than they are today!
