A very warm welcome awaits you and your children in the Pre-Prep Department of King’s College School.
Our fundamental aim in Pre-Prep is to ensure that your children feel happy and safe in these vital first years of schooling.
There are two classes in each year group, from Reception to Year 2. Children meet together in year groups and as a whole department at different times each week. Staff build excellent relationships with the children in their care, across the department, as well as in their own class. Regular meetings take place between staff enabling us to share information and ensure that children’s pastoral and academic needs are catered for effectively.
Children are taught in small classes (each supported by a qualified teaching assistant), in order to help us meet the learning needs of each individual. We expect high standards of work, and are committed to developing a life-long love of learning.
We are keen to foster children’s independence and thinking skills through our topic-based curriculum Pupils have the opportunity to develop their own interests and approach to learning, as well as enjoying more formal teaching in handwriting, reading, writing, comprehension and Mathematics.
We encourage children to take pride in their work and celebrate their achievements through assemblies and displays, including our 'Golden Fleur' board.
We are committed to helping our pupils to develop good manners. Children earn rewards for excellent citizenship and may be awarded the title of ‘Citizen of the Week’ in assembly.
Alongside the important areas of reading, writing and Mathematics, we strive to develop pupils' creativity. All of our teaching topics are cross-curricular, so pupils may, for example, write a story about the dragon that they designed and built in DT. We enrich our curriculum by welcoming visitors and organising trips- Percy the Park Keeper has visited Reception; Year 1 enjoyed the transformation of the School Hall into a Medieval castle; and Year 2 enjoyed sushi at a Japanese restaurant!
All children in Pre-Prep receive specialist teaching in French, Music, PE and Games. They enjoy performing in our music mornings throughout the year, as well as our Christmas productions. From Year 1, pupils can choose to learn a musical instrument and in Year 2, all children learn to play the recorder.
As children reach the end of their time in Year 2, we watch them move happily upstairs into our Junior Department, equipped with the skills, independence and desire to learn that we have nurtured from their very first day at school.
We warmly invite you to visit our department!
