In the senior part of the school, pupils are encouraged to become more independent and literary-minded thinkers. Collaborative learning and the sharing of views in class discussions is greatly valued. Class reading books are used to enable pupils to investigate how authors achieve certain effects. In addition to this, pupils develop their abilities to comment in detail on aspects of language, structure and presentation in a wide variety of texts. Grammar and punctuation rules are revisited and an emphasis is placed upon the accurate, appropriate and sensitive use of these. There are plenty of opportunities for pupils to write creatively, and the understanding of the features of different non-fiction text types is also further developed.
