King's gets twinned

I spent the last month of my sabbatical in Sri Lanka in order to visit some schools in the south. With the help of a charity called ‘Adopt Sri Lanka’ I wanted to investigate the possibility of twinning King’s with a Sri Lankan school.

During a School Assembly I was able to tell the children all about our exciting plans to be twinned with a school called ‘Dikkumbura Sri Siddhartha’ south of Galle.

It is a Government school of 1,600 children aged 5 – 18 and I was thrilled with the warm welcome the children and staff gave me at this particular school. They desperately need help to provide them with more music instruments and sports equipment. They also need staff training in the use of ICT and help with linking their computer room to the internet. The aim of our partnership is to do what we can to help them where possible but also, very importantly, to form strong educational links. In the coming terms it is my hope that the children from both schools will educate each other by exchanging project work on agreed topics.

Mrs Helen Barker has kindly volunteered to coordinate this. This will be very enriching for the children in both our schools. I also hope that each year a member of King’s staff might be able to visit the school for a couple of weeks or more in order to help with staff training and to strengthen our relationship. In future years it would be wonderful if, when our King’s children are older, some of them might volunteer to visit the school in Sri Lanka during their GAP year to help with sport, English, Music and ICT. I look forward to seeing how our relationship with Dikkumbura Sri Siddhartha develops in the coming years.
